The quintet from Montreal The Luyas, formed in 2006, brings together artists from diverse influences. It consists in particular of Sarah Neufeld (violin) from the famous group Arcade Fire. The Luyas’ sound is characterized by the diversity of its instruments (percussion, electric zither, keyboards, guitar, French Horn etc.), and its balanced compositions combining light melodies and rhythmic dancing, but in a discreet way.

A 21 ans, l’australien Harley Streten, alias Flume, jouis déjà d’une solide réputation dans le milieu de la musique électronique. Très prolifique, il a récemment sorti son deuxième album, sur lequel il continue sa quête d’équilibre entre rythmiques hip hop héritées de J-Dilla, melodies aériennes, et nappes de synthétiseur vaporeuses. Plusieurs artistes ont posé leur voix sur ses morceaux, notamment Georges Maples, Jezzabell Doran et Chet Faker.

At 21, the Australian Harley Streten, aka Flume, already has a solid reputation in the world of electronic music. Very prolific, he has recently released his second album, on which he continues his quest for balance between hip hop rhythms inherited from J-Dilla, aerial melodies and layers of gauzy synthesizer. Several artists have contributed vocally to the album, including George Maples, Jezzabell Doran and Chet Faker.

Linnea Olsson est une artiste suédoise discrète qui s’est pourtant faite une place de choix dans le paysage folk européen. Lorsqu’elle ne collabore pas avec la chanteuse Ane Brun, elle allie sa voix éthérée à son violoncelle pour créer des atmosphères envoutantes. Tant sur disque qu’en live, elle met sa technique instrumentale et sa sensibilité au service d’une musique pop folk d’une grâce et d’une finesse rare.

Linnea Olsson is a discreet Swedish artist who has a prominent place on the European folk scene. When she’s not working with the singer Ane Brun, she combines her ethereal voice to her cello to create a captivating atmosphere. Both on disc as well as live, her instrumental technique and sensibility serves pop folk music with a rare grace and finesse.

Julian Pras is a French musician born in Bordeaux, who spent two years of his childhood in the United States. He brings back memories of wide open spaces in his acoustic compositions of a rare finesse, which vary between pop and film music. A perfectionist, he composed, mixed and produced his latest album « Circus Shady Hollow, » and also played most of the instruments (guitars, organs).

Julien Prias est un musicien français né à Bordeaux qui a passé deux ans de son enfance aux États Unis. Il fait ressurgir ses souvenirs de grands espaces dans ses compositions acoustiques d’une finesse rare, qui oscillent entre pop et musique de films. Perfectionniste, il a composé, mixé, produit son dernier album « Shady Hollow Circus », et a joué une grande partie des instruments (guitares, orgues) qui y figurent.

Cody Chesnutt is a Soul singer born in 1968 in Atlanta, USA. After moving to Los Angeles to produce Rythm’n'blues groups, he embarked on a solo career in 2002 with his first album « The Headphone Masterpiece », recorded entirely in his own room. His music is a fusion of rock, blues, soul and funk, and his musical openness has even led him to collaborate with hip hop group « The Roots ». His song « Chips Down, » a new Air France Music favorite, condenses all his influences in a crescendo pop composition.

But even if he is influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Bob Marley, Jesse Boykins offers a Neo-Soul style of music tinged with electronics, which is resolutely turned towards the future.

Pegase, c’est le projet solo de Raphaël d’Hervez, l’un des membres de Minitel Rose, groupe d’électro nantais, né au début des années 2000. C’est sur son propre label, FVTVR RECORDS que Raphaël produit son projet. A ce jour, deux EPs sont sortis: Without Reason EP en avril 2012 et Dreaming Legend EP en Novembre 2012.

Pegase is the solo project of Raphaël d’Hervez, one of the members of Minitel Rose, the electro group from Nantes, born in the early 2000s. Born in Long Beach, Frank Ocean left his hometown for New Orleans at the age of five. There, he tried to develop his musical career. He then met the producer Christopher Stewart, enabling him to sign with the prestigious label Def Jam. In February 2011, he released his first mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, which was well received by critics. His first album Channel Orange was nominated at the 2013 Grammy Awards, where he won a prize for the best contemporary urban album.

Other Lives is an American quintet from Oklahoma. Its music skillfully mixes melodic folk with richly orchestrated arrangements filled with melancholic harmonies. After a first instrumental album, released under the name of Kunek (Flight Of The Flynns, in 2006), the group renamed itself Other Lives and released an album of this name in 2009, followed by Tamer Animals, in 2011.

An actress and international model at an early age, the daughter of Jane Birkin and Jacques Doillon has been hiding another essential part of herself: the singer. Her debut album, Places, was released in 2012.

Rachel Zeffira is a Canadian soprano, composer, and multi-instrumentalist currently based in London, England. She is also one half of the duo Cat’s Eyes. Zeffira has released her first solo album ‘The Deserters’ on 10th December 2012 through RAF Records. Guesting on the album will be members of the London-based psych-rock band TOY.

Spain is an American band formed by Josh Haden, the son of jazz musician Charlie Haden. Particularly inspired by Cowboy Junkies and Velvet Underground, Spain produces well-thought texts and a mostly subdued and polished ambiance. The group’s style, a mixture of dream pop, discreet rock and arrangements sometimes associated with jazz due to their deep, complex sound, brought them immediate success.
After a début album in 1995 (The Blue Moods of Spain), the rock formation brought out two other albums in 1999 and 2001 before splitting up. The reformation of Spain in 2007 gave rise to a tour, then a new opus, The Soul of Spain, in May 2012.

Inspiré notamment par les Cowboy Junkies ou le Velvet Underground, Spain propose des textes travaillés, une ambiance la plupart du temps tamisée et léchée . Le style du groupe, entre pop onirique, rock discret et arrangements parfois liés au jazz de par leur volupté et leur complexité, connaît d’emblée un succès non négligeable. Après un premier album remarqué en 1995 (The Blue Moods of Spain), la formation rock sortira deux autres albums en 1999 et 2001 avant de se séparer. La reformation de Spain en 2007 donne lieu à une tournée, puis finalement à un nouvel opus, The Soul of Spain, en mai 2012.

Norah was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1979, but she grew up in Dallas. She inherited her love of jazz from her mother, a jazz fan. Her father is the musician Ravi Shankar.
In her youth, she won a music student award, for best jazz singer and best composition in 1996. She worked for a time with Wax Poetic in New York from 1999, before recruiting her own musicians, with whom she produced models that quickly attracted the attention of the famous jazz label, Blue Note. The contract was signed in 2001 and a début album followed, Come Away With Me, which was an immediate success all over the world. Eight Grammy nominations in eight different categories! Norah Jones is one of the first to make contemporary jazz so popular.
After another 4 albums since 2004, in 2012 she released Little Broken Heart, produced by the American Danger Mouse, half of the Gnarls Barkley duo.

The band’s music, a sort of taut hypno-pop built on glacial guitar lines, cacophonous drums and Lee’s mournful bark, is blissfully uncategorisable. There might be subtle nods to Joy Division in its naked emotion and to Spiritualized for its devotional intensity, but overall this is music delivered resolutely from its own place. And a hugely restless place at that.

Entre des lignes de guitares glaciales, une batterie noisy et les aboiements mélancoliques de Jamie Lee, l’hypno-pop tendue distillée par Money est merveilleusement inclassable. Au-delà de ses références subtiles à l’émotion brute d’un Joy Division ou à l’intensité quasi religieuse de Spiritualized, cette musique a résolument trouvé sa place. Une place terriblement mouvementée, qui plus est.

∆ (pronounced Alt-j) came together whilst they were all studying their 2nd year at Leeds university in 2008, when Joe showed Gwil, Gus and Thom some songs he’d written over the past few years. A small set was quickly developed using these and newly-written songs, and the band began to build a modest reputation through some crammed gigs in their front room. A name change followed (the band was previously known as FILMS) and now ∆ are currently working on their debut album.
Their music, which they uncertainly label (for want of a better name) jump- or trip-folk, has, in their words, a pert and merciless sound. The sound is pushed and pulled, borrowing and wedging various lo-fi, hip hop and folky pockets to make a haunting and original mulch.

Tout a commencé en 2008 alors qu’ils étaient étudiants en deuxième année à l’université de Leeds. Joe montra à Gwil,Gus et Thom quelques mélodies qu’il avait composées. A partir de ces chansons et de quelques autres écrites par la suite, le groupe commenca à acquérir une petite réputation en organisant des petits concerts. Apres avoir commencé sous le nom de FILMS,le groupe, qui s’appelle aujourd’hui ∆ travaille sur son prochain album.
Leur musique qu’ils ne définissent pas vraiment est un mélange d’ interludes jump ou trip- folks, qu’ils interprètent avec un timbre si particulier et des sonorités décomposées, pleines de fractures, de revirements, qui vous emmènent dans un voyage onirique.

Bio : Chromatics are a band from Portland, Oregon, whose current lineup features singer Ruth Radelet, guitarist Adam Miller, and producer/multi-instrumentalist Johnny Jewel. The band originally featured a trademark sound indebted to punk and lo-fi and described as « noisy » and « chaotic ». After numerous lineup changes, which left guitarist Adam Miller as the sole original member, the band signed to the Italians Do It Better record label and pursued an Italo Disco sound with their album Kill For Love.

Richard Willis Hawley (born 17 January 1967, Sheffield, England) is an English guitarist, singer-songwriter and producer. After his first band Treebound Story (formed while he was still at school) broke up, Hawley found success as a member of Britpop band Longpigs in the 1990s. After that group broke up in 2000, he later joined the band Pulp, led by his friend Jarvis Cocker, for a short time. As a solo musician, Hawley has released seven studio albums.
His last production has been released in 2012 and is called « Standing at the Sky’s Edge ».

Né à Sheffield (Grande-Bretagne) en 1967, Richard Hawley grandit au millieu d’un père guitariste, une mère est chanteuse, et un oncle aussi musicien. Très tôt, il se plonge dans l’utilisation de la guitare et dès l’age de 14 ans, il s’embarque en tournée avec différents groupes, dont Treebound Story puis The Lovebirds, et Longpigs… Mais c’est avec Pulp, aux côtés de son ami de lycée Steve Mackay, que Richard se fait réellement connaître. En 2001, le guitariste entame une carrière solo, sortant un album sous son propre nom. Sa voix de crooner et ses talents de guitariste lui valent un franc succès, et à partir de là, Hawley enchaîne les disques avec une régularité de métronome : Late Night Final sort en 2002, suivi de Lowedges en 2003. Parallèlement, Richard continue de jouer pour Pulp, dont il assure également la première partie.
En 2012, il sort son 7eme album Standing at the Sky’s Edge sur le label Parlophone.

Bio : Beach House is Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand and Bloom is the band’s fourth full-length album. Like their previous releases (Beach House in 2006, Devotion in 2008, Teen Dream in 2010), it further develops their distinctive sound yet stands apart as a new piece of work.
The landscape of Bloom was largely designed on the road, between the countless sound checks and myriad experiences during two years of tour. Throughout this period, melodies, chords, rhythms, words, and textures surfaced in moments of their own choosing. These spontaneous ideas were later gathered and developed in Baltimore, Maryland where the band lives and works.
Bloom was then recorded in late 2011 over a period of seven weeks at Sonic Ranch Studios in Tornillo, TX and mixed for another two at Electric Lady in NYC. The band co-produced the record with Chris Coady.

Si l’on peut considérer Bloom comme le prolongement des trois précédents albums, Beach House en 2006, Devotion en 2008 et Teen Dream en 2010, on trouve cependant de nouvelles sonorités dans cette quatrième édition.
Un paysage musical construit pendant deux ans avec des mélodies, des sonorités et des rythmes qu’Alex et Victoria ont engrangés au fil de tournées pour les retravailler une fois de retour à Baltimore.
L’album Bloom, co-produit avec Chris Coady, a été enregistré en 7 semaines fin 2011 dans les studios Sonic Ranch à Tornillo au Texas, le mixage a ensuite eu lieu à Electric Lady New York en deux semaines.

Après 12 années, six albums, de nombreux EP et morceaux divers, Chris Cark, qui a vécu à Brighton, à Birmingham et à Berlin a toujours le sentiment d’être là où il doit être. Il est vrai que son rythme de travail et sa quête musicale lui ont apporté une plus grande assurance. « Je ne veux pas paraître arrogant. Je sais qu’il y a des milliers de musiciens qui voudraient être là où je suis et d’une certaine façon, je sais que j’ai de la chance mais dans le même temps j’ai la conviction d’avoir fait ce qu’il fallait ; j’ai travaillé, j’ai voyagé, j’ai donné des concerts et maintenant ça paie ».
Au-delà de son activité d’enregistrement, Chris Clark a cherché à atteindre l’audience la plus large possible et Chris , qui refuse de se laisser absorber par un courant, a partagé la scène avec Portishead, Drexciya et Amon Tobin aussi bien qu’avec Tortoise et Beach House. Son travail de remix dans lequel il mêle les genres apporte un genre unique à son travail de collaboration avec notamment Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Friendly Fires,Kuedo and Health
Toutes les qualités de Chris se retrouvent rassemblées dans son album « Iradelphic » : l’impertinence de la jeunesse dont il se saisit pour lui apporter la confiance de la maturité qu’il traduit par le refus d’une musique à partition au titre d’une sous-culture ou d’une certaine allégeance, mettant en avant la franchise, le désir naturel de communiquer en direct sans aucune forme d’obscurantisme. C’est une musique qui repousse les limites technologiques sans jamais aller à l’encontre du public.

Twelve years, six albums, untold EP tracks and stints living in Brighton, Birmingham and Berlin later, Chris’ sense that he is where he wants to be hasn’t changed; indeed, his work rate and exploration of his own sound has made him feel even more sure of his position. “I don’t ever want to sound arrogant,” he says, “because I know there are thousands of musicians who would like to be where I am, and in a sense I know I am very lucky – but at the same time there is a feeling of confidence that I have been doing the right things. I’ve put the work in, I’ve done so much travelling and so many gigs, and it’s paying off now.”
Outside of his recording work, Chris has also been reaching out to as many audience sectors as possible: still that kid who refuses to join any one « music gang », he has shared stages not only with Portishead, Drexciya and Amon Tobin but also Tortoise and Beach House. His remix work, too, crosses genres, bringing his unique style to bear on works by Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Friendly Fires, Kuedo and Health among many others.
And so all of Chris’s qualities have come to play on ‘Iradelphic’: that youthful cockiness that he took in hand and wilfully transformed into a mature confidence that shows in his music ever more with each release; the refusal to partition music by subculture or allegiance; and more than anything, the straightforwardness, the natural desire to communicate directly without any wilful obscurantism. This is music that pushes technological limits, but never at the expense of reaching out directly to the listener, regardless of whether they are a “head” or not.

From the outset, Gerard Love was clear that he wanted to establish a group name for the record, a name that was evocative and ambiguous, that could somehow place the music within a slightly blurry and imagined context. He didn’t want to give the impression that the record was just about him. Having settled on the name, Lightships, he sought out a cast of Glasgow-based friends to play on the record that was starting to take shape in his head; Dave McGowan (guitar, Teenage Fanclub), Brendan O’Hare (drums, from the first incarnation of Teenage Fanclub), Tom Crossley (flute, International Airport and The Pastels) and Bob Kildea (bass, Belle & Sebastian).

Liberated by a feeling that he had complete carte blanche to do whatever he wanted, Gerard came to a realisation that the key to the sound of the record would be tremolo, delay and flute. At times the record has the dynamics of a soundtrack, as one of Tom Crossley’s flute lines weaves into the ether and Gerard’s vocals bounce off each other. Or, as on Sweetness In Her Spark, the group lock into a relaxed and breezy groove that demands the windows be flung open.

Lightships is a name that perfectly captures the atmosphere of the music – sparkling and radiant and illuminated throughout by Love’s melodic gifts and taste for adventurous arrangements. The overall sound, while as warm and immediate as the songs Gerard writes for Teenage Fanclub, is more free flowing and loose. Muddy Rivers is carried along on a wave of interlocked instrumentation while Photosynthesis is a hazy wash of flutes and echo.

After the two million debut albums sold for ‘We Started Nothing’ in 2008, the four million singles sold via ‘Great DJ’, ‘That’s Not My Name’ and ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’, the ‘Best Album’ Ivor Novello Award in May 2009, the Grammy nomination for ‘Best New Artist’ in December 2009, their music and songs sound-tracking contemporary culture itself from ‘Gossip Girl’ to ‘One Tree Hill’ to ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and the now iconic 2008 iPod commercial which saw ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’ storm non stop around the planet, the Ting Tings, naturally, felt insane.

In two rollercoaster years, the Manchester DIY pop-art titans had a brace of global No.1 singles and appeared on the planet’s live stages as the world’s most dynamic duo: an inscrutable man called Jules De Martino giving his all on the drums, while their vocal powerhouse Katie White, armed with giant bass drum and a guitar hanging down her back, shouted out their punk-pop anthems.

Le groupe Electric Guest est formé d’Asa Taccone , originaire de Berkeley en Californie et de Cornbread, de son vrai nom, Matthew Compton, originaire de Danville en Virginie. Il y avait une nana plus âgée, un peu dans mon genre qui travaillait là , elle était très branchée new age et tous ces trucs métaphysiques et avant mon départ lle m’a dit de ne jamais oublier que j’étais « un hôte électrique de l’univers » . Je ne sais pas pourquoi mais ça m’a marqué ».
Le groupe et sa musique sont le résultat de rencontres et de souvenirs qui ont conduit à la création d’un premier album , Mondo
La qualité nomade de chaque morceau vous pénètre de ses structures symphoniques aux accents imprévisibles (mais jamais discordants) sans parler des harmonies vocales mélancoliques qui vous emmènent dans une odyssée sonique onirique de près de 9 minutes avec le premier single Troubleman.

Electric Guest is comprised of Asa Taccone, from Berkeley, California and Cornbread (legally Matthew Compton), from Danville,Virginia. When they play live, they pick up three friends to fill out the complex instrumentation: Asa plays several instruments, Cornbread nearly a dozen (including, to be fair, triangle and tambourine).

Electric Guest vocalist, writer and co-founder Asa Taccone explains the true life genesis of the band’s name: “When I got kicked out of high school in Berkeley, I started hanging out at a donut shop. An older woman who worked there was a weirdo like me, into a lot of new age-y, metaphysical shit and before I left she told me to always remember that I was ‘an electric guest of the universe.’ For some reason it stuck with me.” Like the titular origin, the band and its music is a collection of people and memories Asa has picked up along the way during his long, circuitous journey towards completion of Mondo. This nomadic quality permeates every one of their songs, with their symphonic structures and unpredictable (yet never jarring) twists and turns—not to mention the soulful vocals that guide the listener through dreamy sonic odysseys like the near-9-minute first single “Troubleman.”

With the band recently signed to Downtown Records and readying Mondo for release in spring 2012, the public will soon be able to take in the album’s wealth of different influences, rhythms, moods and textures and draw their own conclusions.

The legend tells that during a video shoot in the U.S., Woodkid received, straight from great American guitarist Richie Havens’ hands, a banjo that immediately replaced his piano, at least for a while. Without neglecting his activity as a director (for music or even cinema, also part of his project), Woodkid decided to devote himself to make his own music.
Woodkid is a whole creative project conceived by Yoann Lemoine, where every aspects is treated : both music and image. Obviously, he directed the music video for « Iron » himself, starring British top model Agyness Deyn.
When listenning to Woodkid, an obvious thought goes to Antony and The Johnsons : Woodkid and Anthony could be kindred spirits of the voice. We can also hear the sweet folk influences from New York and a brillant way to play with melodies. The all thing emphases Yoann Lemoine’s gift for songwritting, that floats somewhere between Neil Hannon and Bonnie Prince Billy.
The Iron EP revealed a universe of fragile grace : four original songs, written either on guitar or piano.

Fittingly, the seeds of his own band were cinematic and collaborative in nature, having begun as a multi-media project entitled Waterproof9 with Quebec visual artist Brigitte Henry. His core four-piece band of Watson (vox, keys), Mishka Stein (bass), Simon Angell (guitar) and Robbie Kuster (drums) began to take shape in the wake of the self-released Just Another Ordinary Day in 2003, and before long buzz on their live show had lead to performances with an impressively diverse group of artists, from Phillip Glass and Steve Reich, to Feist. In the summer of 2006, they were invited on a European tour with the late James Brown, just before the release of Close to Paradise. 

His 2009 album, Wooden Arms, saw the band expand in the live setting to include a string quartet—not surprisingly, considering the lush arrangements present on all the albums. Indeed by this time Watson himself had established a reputation as a producer and composer of film scores, in addition to role as, band-leader, piano-player and singer-songwriter. The Wooden Arms tour fittingly culminated in 2011 with a collaborative performance with Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which saw the renowned symphony performing Watson’s songs alongside the band.

Andy is somewhat less traditional. His career began in the United States, where he discovered drumming and hip hop and developed an obsession with breakbeats. Arriving in the UK right at the height of the 90s acid house boom, he soon began delving into electronic sound.
The group’s first album is a potent testament to the alchemical union of breakbeat sorcerer and pop princess. Right from the start, Lamb were dedicated to producing music with a difference – a resolve that still continues to yield musical magic of the rarest sort.

This is undoubtedly why they were chosen by the French film-makers’ group Le Broadcast Club chose Limousine to provide the soundtrack for their first short, which was released in 2009 under the auspices of film production company Autour de Minuit. The film, like the track, was called Lila, and it went on to achieve distinction in the LABO competition at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (jury prize, Prix Télérama), at the Concorto Film Festival in Pontenure, Italy and at the 35th Annual César Awards ceremony in 2010.

Biographie :

Housse de Racket first made their mark when they toured internationally as support act to Phoenix, for whom they had already worked as session musicians, and then with their eponymous debut, Housse de Racket. Comprising just two tracks and produced by Gonzales and Renaud Letang, this came out solely as an EP and a free download on the group’s website.
In October 2008 they released their first full-length album, Forty Love. Included here was their best-known piece, “Oh Yeah!”: a slice of pop-funk that paid tribute to such R&B heroes as Stevie Wonder, Zapp & Roger, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Isley Brothers, Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Prince, George Clinton and Chic.
In February 2011 the duo announced that they had signed to the Kitsuné and Cooperative Music labels, and a new album entitled Alesia duly appeared on 22 August that year. At the helm this time round was respected producer (and one half of the group Cassius) Philippe Zdar, who had just produced the latest Phoenix album; further input was provided by Kitsuné label boss Gildas Loaec. The two can also be heard on the most recent release from Cassius, the Rawkers EP on Ed Banger Records.

The music of Hypnolove is as eclectic as their instrumentation and sonic palette – a declaration of their devotion to leisure time and relaxation.

Bio :
Hypnolove are a cult band from Toulouse in South-West France. Their first album, Eurolove, was mixed by Renaud Letang (Gonzales, Feist, Katerine).

In terms of roots, the band are true Europeans – fans of Eurodance, Italian basslines and singers and German and American electronic music. Further influences include classic R&B, along with contemporary artistes like Connan Mockasin.

The past few years have seen them creating stunning remixes for the likes of Sebastien Tellier, Findlay Brown, Go Go Charlton and Siobanh Donaghy, while still finding time to write and record their new album on the Record Makers label. The album was produced by Mickey Moonlight, a mainstay of the Ed Banger label, and the match proved fruitful: Moonlight had an instinctive feel for the backbone of the Hypnolove sound, helping the groups spread their wings still further while adding his own distinctive touches.

The “Holiday Reverie” EP finds the Hypnolove recipe in full effect: synth, bass and afro-tinged guitars and funky percussion blending with shimmering arpeggios and idiosyncratic vocals to create a classic summer hit.

Biography :

Real Estate came together in Ridgewood, New Jersey in 2008, comprising singer/guitarist Martin Courtney, guitarist Matt Mondanile (Ducktails), bassist Alex Bleeker (of Alex Bleeker and the Freaks), and drummer Etienne Pierre Duguay (of Predator Vision). 2011 saw the arrival of Jonah Maurer on keyboards and guitar, while Duguay was replaced by new drummer Jackson Pollis.

Singles duly appeared on the Underwater Peoples and Woodsist labels, followed by the band’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2009 and much touring in the support slot for acts including Girls, Kurt Vile, Woods and Deerhunter. In 2010, Real Estate performed at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona. In 2012 they played at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.

Real Estate signed with the Domino Recording Company in 2011, a move Matt Mondanile explained succinctly in a recent interview with New Zealand magazine Groove Guide: “Domino Records are cool … They really let you get on with your own thing.” The group’s sophomore record, Days, was released on 18 October 2011.

Bio:

Fleet Foxes are a Seattle quintet fronted by singer Robin Pecknold. They came to prominence with their second EP, Sun Giant, and quickly followed this up with their eponymous debut on the prestigious Sub Pop label, released on 03 June in the USA and 09 June in the UK.
Rolling Stone gave the album four stars, comparing it to the Beach Boys, Band of Horses and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Fleet Foxes themselves define their music as a “baroque harmonic pop” blend. Straddling the divide between rock and folk, the group’s major focal points are melody and vocal harmonies. As such, the songs on the album combine structural complexity with a striking lucidity – in fact, at times it feels as though one has just listened to two songs at once.
A memorable highlight of their 2008 touring activities was their onstage appearance with Wilco, covering the Bob Dylan classic “I Shall Be Released”.
Their second album, Helplessness Blues, came out in May 2011. One year on, it remains an unmitigated delight.

Bio:

Composer is the pairing of two souls who have never dreamed of world tours, TV appearances or groupies. Two souls standing up for artistry, crafting beautiful albums with care. Eric Raynaud, already known for his experimental electronic explorations, and elektro-folkie Guillaume Eluerd, who has already released two albums.

Composer is the result of this strange collision between two unknown quantities. The result of a week given over to transcendence of self, culminating in a one-night-only live show.

The show turned out to be the start of an authentic collaboration, one crystallised and informed by the desire to continue the adventure and extend it in a studio setting. The two protagonists quickly realised they shared a purposeful determination, an aesthetic sensibility and a feel and flair for sonic DIY.

The next few months saw an ongoing online exchange of files between Eric and Guillaume, leading to their first joint compositions. Several months more down the line and following an acoustic studio session, it was official: they were a duo.

They’ve often been labeled “electropop”, though this doesn’t really do justice to the wide range of sounds and instruments on their album.

Their 80s pop influences are augmented by an eclectic array of sonic textures drawing on world music, smoothly and skilfully integrating sounds from all around the world: a subtle evocation of the Middle East here, a dash of Afropop there, rounded off with a sprinkling of tropical rhythms.

Bio:

Soko expresses herself in slightly baroque folk songs that feel faintly like cowboy adventures. She has been making waves for a few years now, both on the Web and in countless live appearances with only a guitarist to accompany her.

Soko – sometimes stylised as SoKo – is the stage name of singer/actress Stéphanie Sokolinski, who was born in Bordeaux in 1986.

Like many of today’s artistes, she first made her name via MySpace. Her best-known track is “I’ll Kill Her” (2007) and she has played at a number of festivals: the Printemps de Bourges, the Eurockéennes, Les Francofolies, Pukkelpop in Belgium and Dockville in Germany.

She has also appeared in various movies, including the Sylvie Ayme film Mes Copines. She also acted alongside Gérard Depardieu and François Cluzet in Xavier Giannoli’s In The Beginning (French title: À l’Origine, also known as Je Suis Parti De Rien), which was entered into the main competition at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival. In February 2012 Soko released her first album, I Thought I Was An Alien.

The fourth album by French singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sébastien Tellier sweeps us away into a hypnotic, futuristic world. The tracks here are tinted with electric guitars, synths and dance beats, and infused with a sense of liberation and escape from the everyday.

Biography:

Sébastien Tellier was born in Paris in the mid-70s. His musical debut came at the end of the 90s, when “Fantino”, his contribution to the Source Rocks compilation, caught the attention of the critics. He then went into the studio to record what would become his first album.
To mix the album, Tellier enlisted the services of one Quentin Dupieux, also known as musician/filmmaker Mr Oizo (with whom Tellier would work again on the soundtrack to the film Steak en 2007); Dupieux was assisted by Guillaume Lebraz.

The end result, L’Incroyable Vérité, hit the streets in 2001. Two years later, Tellier returned with Politics. Having recorded the original soundtrack to the film Narco, he returned in 2006 with Sessions, an album of acoustic versions of his more popular songs. This was followed in 2008 by Sexuality, with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk in the producer’s chair. That same year, he represented France at Eurovision with his song “Divine”, admittedly failing to secure the top slot.

The release on 23 April 2012 of My God Is Blue, Tellier’s latest album, is undeniably the most important event in the history of the Record Makers label. Here, without a doubt, is Sébastien Tellier’s most profound and fully-realised work to date, providing clear evidence of both musical and spiritual maturity. A work of art devoted to the service of another being, on an infinitely higher plane of existence.

Bio:

Little Dragon members Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass) and Erik Bodin (drums) met at school in Gothenburg, where they were all in different groups. In time they joined forces, adding keyboardist Håkan Wirenstrand and releasing their first single on Off The Wall before signing to UK indie label Peacefrog Records.

Following their self-titled debut, Little Dragon’s second album, Machine Dreams, was a vibrant electro-pop adventure with strong echoes of Prince, but rendered all the more distinctive by the intimate, sensual tones of the charming Swedish-Japanese singer.

Recorded in the band’s home town of Gothenburg, Machine Dreams was a substantial leap forward while remaining unmistakably Little Dragon. Yukimi’s warm voice, Erik’s nimble drumming, the broad pallet of sounds emanating from Håkan’s synthesisers and Fredrik’s bubbling bass lines came together to create a sound few of their contemporaries could match.

Machine Dreams came out in Britain and the United States in August 2009, quickly becoming a favourite with the critics. In late 2010 the group supported Gorillaz on the European and Australian legs of their world tour, having contributed to the Plastic Beach album. Meanwhile they were hard at work on their own third album, Ritual Union, which duly appeared on 25 July 2011.

Biography:

Singer Madeline Follin and guitarist Brian Oblivion were Manhattan-based film students with a passion for rock music. Both aged 21, they shared an affinity for Phil Spector-style melodies and the Spector-esque echoes found in groups like The Ramones and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Three tracks posted on the Bandcamp page in early 2010 soon came to the attention of the finely tuned ears at the independent website Pitchfork Media, who promptly included one track, “Go Outside”, in their “Best new music” category. The following year would see Cults gigging, signing to In The Name Of – a label run by Lily Allen with financial backing from Sony-BMG – and recording their debut album.

The irresistible rise of Cults continued in spring 2011 with the follow-up singles, “You Know What I Mean” and “Abducted”. The duo embarked on a tour, taking in both Europe and the United States. And when their eponymous debut emerged at the end of June, it became clear that here was one of the year’s major discoveries.

Biography:

M83 originally consisted of two young men from Antibes with a fondness for mixing up different styles, including electronic music, pop and ambient. It took them just one album, however, to establish their own distinctive sound, a spacey yet melodic form of electronica influenced by Tangerine Dream and Mogwai.

The Côte d’Azur is not, at first glance, the most rock’n’roll location in the world. This is particularly true in terms of the music made there, in which frenetic energy would seem to be a rare or indeed non-existent quality. In 2000, however, it gave birth to one album that met with universal acclaim: the debut of M83, a duo formed by Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau, both of whom were barely 20 at the time of the album’s release.

Over the following months they notched up one live triumph after another, building up their popularity to the point of securing a booking for the prestigious Sónar Festival in Barcelona. Meanwhile, they also found themselves in a position to reach a wider audience: in 2002, Gooom Disques signed a global licensing deal for M83 with Labels/EMI Music France.
Returning to Antibes, M83 spent 2002 writing their second album. The process was long but productive, and in time twelve titles were selected from the accumulated material. Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts came out in April 2003. With a sound that was more distinctive and clearly defined, the album enjoyed greater success than its predecessor without sacrificing any of M83’s unique melodic sensibility, their infectiously fresh approach to sound or the rich textures generated by the juxtaposition of calm compositions with more rhythmic pieces.

In 2008, M83 released Saturdays=Youth, an album recorded at Rockfield Studios in South Wales with producers Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros) and Ewan Person (Rapture). Then, in 2011, M83 announced its first European concerts for that autumn, to be followed up by a more substantial tour at the start of 2012. By now the group was a solo vehicle, with Anthony Gonzales at the helm. 18 October 2011 saw the release of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming on Naïve Records.

Biography:

Shimmering Stars are a group from Vancouver, Canada, and are signed to the Almost Musique label.

The innocence of their music evokes the fifties and sixties, drawing inspiration from such greats as Del Shannon, Phil Spector and Bo Diddley. The band began as a recording project in spring 2010, when Rory McClure created the initial demos in his parents’ garage in the town of Kamloops, British Columbia.

Young and lacking in self-esteem, Rory McClure resorted to music as a means of self-expression. Miniature retro-styled ballads inspired by the Everly Brothers, drenched in reverb and crystalline guitar sounds and garnished with a choice smattering of nostalgic lyrics.

Violent Hearts is the band’s debut album, released on Almost Musique.

For her ninth outing, the talented, pure-voiced Californian songstress presents a folk album full of catchy tunes tinged with bossa nova and jazz.

Biography:

Prolific Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Mia Doi Todd first started singing in choirs as a child, later going on to study classical vocal technique.

She went on to find her own voice writing songs about love, nature and loss. Her first solo album, The Ewe and the Eye, came out in 1997, around the same time as she graduated from Yale University. She then spent a year studying avant-garde dance in Japan before returning to the United States and releasing two acoustic albums, Come Out Of Your Mine (1999) and ZeroOne (2001).

In 2002 she signed to Columbia Records and recorded The Golden State, collaborating with star producer Mitchell Froom to create more intricate arrangements. There then followed two albums on independent label Plug Research: Manzanita and a remix album, La Ninja: Amor And Other Dreams Of Manzanita.

En 2008, Mia worked with producer Carlos Nino on Gea, an album released on her own label Zen City. This was followed a year later by Morning Music, an instrumental album of music for meditation. 2011 saw the release of Mia’s ninth album, Cosmic Ocean Ship, with Jonathan Wilson in the producer’s chair. Recorded in Los Angeles on analogue tape, the album is rich in warmth and depth – the perfect showcase for her beautiful and at times delicate singing voice.

Bewitchingly fresh-sounding dream pop from this Canadian duo, enhanced with floating piano notes and guitar reverb effects.

Biography:

Tucked away in Southwestern Ontario lies the town of Guelph, birthplace of Memoryhouse. Evan Abeele, a dedicated classical music student blessed with an encyclopaedic knowledge of pop, devised the band as a multimedia art project, pairing his own instrumental compositions with the photography and short films of Denise Nouvion. Pooling their musical and visual endeavours seemed the most effective strategy for fighting off an archetypal adolescent angst made all the more intense by the paralysing effects of the Canadian winter.

Evan and Denise soon started writing pieces of their own, recording, refining and conceptualising their audio-visual collages in the bedroom of a suburban family house. Individually and jointly, they experimented with themes, lyrics and multiple layers of instrumentation.

Following several tours in Europe and the US, they signed to Seattle’s most legendary label: Sub Pop Records. In September 2011, Memoryhouse released an improved version of their EP The Years, originally recorded at home.

The title of their latest album, The Slideshow Effect, illustrates that some things have remained constants for the duo, such as their enduring interest in finding ways of synthesising the aural and the visual. It refers to the photographic and cinematic technique of zooming and panning to animate still images, as often found in documentary films.

Biography:

Zach Condon formed Beirut as his solo vehicle in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2006.
Previously, aged just 16, Condon had dropped out of school to travel Europe with his brother Ryan. Here he encountered Balkan folk music for the first time. On his return from Europe, Condon enrolled at the University of New Mexico, where he studied Portuguese and photography.

During this period he also recorded songs in his bedroom. The pieces were subsequently finished in the studio with the help of drummer Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel, A Hawk and a Hacksaw) and violinist Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw). Condon signed to Ba Da Bing! Records under the pseudonym of Beirut and released his first album, Gulag Orkestar, on 9 May 2006, subsequently recruiting various musical friends for his first-ever concerts in Knaresborough in the UK and in New York.

9 October 2007 saw the release on 4AD of the second offering from Beirut: The Flying Club Cup, an album recorded mostly in Albuquerque, New Mexico and completed at Arcade Fire’s studio in Quebec. The album finds Zach Condon under the influence of the French chanson, particularly the work of Gainsbourg, Brel and Montand. The group set off to tour the US; then, in April 2008, Condon decided to cancel his European tour in order to rest.

On 27 January 2009, Beirut delivered the double EP March of the Zapotec/Holland. In February of the same year came the group’s American TV debut on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Condon spent the winter of 2010–2011 working on new material in New York. On 30 August 2011, on his own label Pompeii Records, he released his third album The Rip Tide, recorded with Perrin Cloutier (accordion, piano), Paul Collins (bass), Ben Lanz (trombone, piano and tuba), Nick Petree (drums, percussion) and Kell Pratt (trumpet). Zach Condon can also be heard on the 2011 Blondie album Panic of Girls.

Jonti’s debut album sees the South African sampling genius and multi-instrumentalist blending pop and electro influences to create a swirling retro-futurist cocktail.

Biography:

Multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer and vocalist Jonti began assembling music after leaving his native South Africa for Australia in 1999.

Despite having recorded with the likes of Mark Ronson, Santigold, Sean Lennon, the Dap-Kings and producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Kurt Vile), he opted to create his debut album Twirligig entirely on his own, making it a true solo offering in every respect.

Twirligig is inspired by a selection of Jonti’s favourite artistes, including Madlib, Stereolab, Free Design and The Beach Boys.

But the key influence behind the album was animator/filmmaker Norman McLaren.

“His films are complex, but they’re still fun,” Jonti explains. “You can feel his enthusiasm for techniques and experimentation. I try to make simple pop songs with that same enthusiasm.”

Stone’s Throw Records is proud of its first Australian signing, and warmly welcomes Jonti to the family. When you hear Twirligig, you’ll soon see why.
