« The Stepkids » (Stones Throw)
The Stepkids, a trio hailing from Connecticut, deliver an album of psychedelic soul with a funky, poppy undertow, very much in the tradition of Curtis Mayfield or Sly Stone. A modern homage to black American music, from the 60s to the present day.
The Stepkids were formed in the East Coast state of Connecticut in 2010, with influences including psychedelic rock, funk and soul. Made up of former Alicia Keys sideman Jeff Gitelman (vocals and guitar), Dan Edinberg (bass and keyboards) and Jim Walsh (drums), the three Stepkids are smart cookies: each of them has built up a solid musical track record, either working as hired hands for star acts over the past ten years or writing music for films or advertising.
3 October 2011 saw the release of their eponymous debut on the Stones Throw label (best-known signing: Aloe Blacc). The album has been very well received by critics in the US, the UK and mainland Europe – as has the single, a slow-burning, instantly seductive soul groove with hints of rock and pop entitled “Legend In My Own Mind”.
